Abstract

Environmental protection has become a major issue for our society. Our decisions, whether on a national, local or individual scale, have consequences and many actions can reduce our impact. Mobility plays a major role in this objective as in France, it represents 29% of greenhouse gas emissions. Agile, fast and practical, the bicycle seems to be the ideal solution for getting around town without emitting the slightest emissions. The government has understood this since it strongly encourages its use, especially for commuting. However, even if cyclists are more and more numerous on the bike paths, where are they when it comes to transporting groceries for example? With this master thesis, I explore the different uses of bicycles, in particular the transport of loads. This research allowed me to answer my questions and to discover what are the limits of bicycle transportation. To understand the current situation of cyclists in France, I first studying the history of the bicycle, from its invention until today. Then, I focused on the bike transportation topic and I gathered testimonies. Viewed from my designer’s perspective, all this informations allowed me to discern the barriers, the limits and the levers to this use. This research work has helped me to carry out my end of study project at l’Ecole de design Nantes Atlantique.
